Having just announced 19 candidates for the pilot project of the brand new Rural Changemakers program created by the Rural Ontario Institute ROI , Vicki believes these bright, ambitious, young thinkers will flourish in a program designed to develop future-focused leaders. Passionate about sharing information regarding food insecurities in Ontario, Maggie currently works as treasurer of the Exeter Community Food Bank where she is heavily involved in the day-to-day activities.
Now working for the town of St. Marys, she also volunteers with the United Way Perth-Huron. The program promises to be challenging. Each participant chosen is between the ages of 18 and 29 from several counties including Huron and Bruce and reaching into Renfrew, Essex-Kent and on to Hamilton. The goal is to build leadership skills by working closely with the community to solve high-priority issues, explains Vicki.
First, they will dive into seven weeks of online, experiential and interactive webinar-learning on the fundamentals of community building. By increasing their skills and working together, they will establish a team of people whom they can depend on for the rest of their lives.
Personally, as a person who has been in leadership development for her entire career, Vicki says this program really spoke to her. This program is such a unique way of tackling this. This is hands-on — working directly with people in their own community. Rural Changemakers takes leadership training to a new generation. The Rural Voice hopes to follow up with Maggie and Morgan late this fall to discover what project they identified and developed in their communities.

Lee Siertsema, owner of Blyth Veterinary Services, taking care of animals is just part of providing for the community in which he was raised.
Siertsema, who was raised just outside of Blyth, had his heart set on medicine when he graduated from F. Madill Secondary School, though back then, he thought his patients would be a little more bipedal. He decided, however, to pursue veterinary school and the rest, as they say, is history. Blyth Veterinary Services is a full-service large animal medical service, Siertsema said, which differentiates it from a lot of larger farm clinics which specialize in specific animals, like dairy or equine practices.

Having grown up on a goat farm, he said he knows there is more than just dairy out there when it comes to vet practices. The horse he was working on, for example, had a broken jaw. That choice has paid off, he said, both with how successful the practice is becoming and with how he is able. Siertsema started at the Blyth Veterinary Services in May of , returning to Blyth after being away for 10 years, and three years later he started to take over the practice from Dr. Lavern Clark and Dr. Phil Garriock, with the latter still working at the clinic with him.
